A Week in the Life: Online MSDS Student Chapin (Meny) Large
I started the University of Virginia’s M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) online program in August 2025, making this my first semester. Alongside my studies, I work full time as a toxicology analyst where I analyze biological samples to quantify drugs. My work involves data that helps identify patterns in results and troubleshoot unexpected instrument issues. This is what drew me toward data science from the start. My goal is to combine my background in biology and chemistry with data science to advance efficiency and innovation in science.
I was drawn to UVA because of its supportive community, real-world approach to data science, and the flexibility of the online format, which allows me to balance my professional and personal life. I’m also fortunate to have an employer who supports my educational goals, allowing slight flexibility in my schedule when needed to attend class or meet deadlines. This is a huge help in keeping everything running smoothly. I wanted to pursue my graduate degree to challenge myself academically without stepping away from my current career, and UVA’s program structure makes the balance possible.
In this post, I want to give a peek into my typical week and share how I juggle coursework, work, and personal life without sacrificing productivity or motivation.
Weekly Schedule
Balancing full-time work and graduate studies means my weeks are structured but also adaptable. I rely heavily on time blocking to create dedicated space for coursework, assignments, and review. Some weeks flow effortlessly, while others keep me on my toes, especially when assignments take longer than I've planned.
Classes take place in the evenings after work, so I plan my study sessions around those times. I like to keep my schedule organized in a digital calendar where I can clearly see blocks for work, classes, study time, fitness, and personal time. Having that visual layout helps me stay on track and make sure I’m setting aside time for both productivity and rest.
To make the most of my time, I use NaturalReader to listen to course readings or discussion posts while I work or commute. It’s a simple but effective way to stay engaged and get ahead on assignments. Some days are more school-heavy, while others give me breathing room to focus on personal commitments or unwind. I’ve learned that the key to success is creating structure with built-in flexibility, giving myself enough space to handle a long assignment when needed but also knowing when to step away and recharge.
Community and Cohort Support
One of the best parts of the UVA MSDS program has been how connected the community feels, even though we’re all online. From the first week, our cohort started building relationships through breakout rooms, group projects, and messaging channels. We’ve developed a support network that will be a strong foundation for the rest of our time in the program. What’s especially rewarding is the diversity of the cohort. We come from different industries and academic backgrounds. Hearing unique perspectives not only deepens discussions but also broadens the way I approach data problems. There’s something truly uplifting about learning alongside a group of people who share the same passion for data and the same drive to help one another learn and succeed.
The faculty have also been incredibly supportive and encouraging. There is always a professor or TA available to help out when you get stuck or have a question. The faculty and staff are 100% invested in our success as students, taking the time to ensure we understand the material and feel confident applying it beyond the classroom. UVA also provides a variety of student resources, from academic support to wellness tools, and the program team is always open to hearing what students need to thrive.
As a student ambassador, I’ve also had the opportunity to connect with prospective students and share my experience — something I’ve found both meaningful and rewarding. It’s exciting to be able to highlight a program I truly believe in and feel grateful to be part of.
Balancing work, school and life
Finding balance is always a work in progress, but it’s something I’ve learned to prioritize. I’m intentional about scheduling time to rest and recharge in between work and study sessions. I enjoy reading, thrifting, watching sporting events, and baking — all things that help me unwind after a long week. I also make sure to spend time with my family whenever I can. Some of my favorite weekends are the ones spent hunting and fishing together, enjoying the peace and quiet of being outdoors.
I’ve learned that maintaining harmony isn’t just about perfect time management, it’s about flexibility and giving yourself grace. Some weeks I get everything done early. Others, well, require a little extra effort. What matters most is consistency and remembering to take care of myself along the way.
