From accounting to analytics, Tiandra Threat is blending her love of numbers with a passion for business strategy and technology. A Richmond, Virginia native and first-generation master’s student, Threat is pursuing her M.S. in Data Science (MSDS) at the University of Virginia (UVA) after discovering how data science connects statistics, business, and innovation. In this Q&A, Threat shares how her path from accounting led her to data science, what she’s learned so far in the program, and her advice for anyone considering taking the same leap.

Q: Tell us about your path to Data Science.

I took statistics in my sophomore year at Brightpoint Community College. Math was always my favorite subject and I loved the analytics of statistics. That sparked my interest in pursuing a master’s degree in statistics. I researched the opportunities that could come from having that education, and I learned that data science "houses" statistics, as well as business analytics and data engineering. It thought it would be a great addition to an accounting background. I told my advisor about it and was highly encouraged to apply to UVA’s program.

Q: What do you hope to do with a Data Science Master's Degree?

I hope to use my degree for opportunities at the intersection of business and technology, where a data scientist would be a great addition to a team on a project to model outcomes of IPOs, M&A, Divestiture, or restructuring deals.

Q: What has surprised you about the MSDS program so far?

There is just as much support and opportunities for graduates as there are for undergrads. As a first-generation master’s student, I didn’t know what to expect and felt intimidated. However, we all built relationships within the cohort months before classes started. There is also an open-door policy for all the program directors, faculty, and staff members. It’s a plus that the professors are super cool and try to make the experience as manageable and rewarding as possible with some of us coming from non-data backgrounds.

Q: What are you involved in outside of class?

Outside of class, you can find me exploring Grounds to learn the UVA community and discovering additional resources for myself and others. I also like to explore Charlottesville as a whole. On the weekends, I’m often in Richmond spending time with my family.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering a Master’s in Data Science?

Take the leap of faith. The program is rigorous; however, it is very rewarding. A short-term sacrifice for a HUGE return on investment is well worth it. A master’s in data science is one of the top three highest-paying degrees to pursue in 2025 (according to Forbes) and is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. The starting salary averages ~$118K. Beyond the numbers, you get to make a meaningful data-driven impact on society and the industries or communities that are dear to you.

Q: What are some fun facts about yourself?

I once was heavy into plants and owned over 50 rare and exotic plants, including a “Strawberry Shake” and a Variegated Alocasia Frydek.
