Meet Holly Stancil: Your New Data Science Career Advisor

We are excited to introduce Holly as a new career advisor at the UVA School of Data Science. Her focus is simple: helping students gain clarity about their goals, present their skills effectively, and approach the job search with confidence and strategy.

To get to know Holly, we asked her a few questions students often have about working with a career advisor.
Q: What’s your background, and how does it help students?
I have worked on nearly every side of hiring, including on-campus interviewing, candidate sourcing, resume screening, hiring management, and HR leadership. Most recently, I ran my own career coaching practice supporting job seekers from entry-level to senior executive roles.
For students, that means I understand how hiring decisions are made and what employers look for. I use that perspective to help you position your experience clearly and strategically.
Q: What do you enjoy helping students with most?
Clarity! Once you know where you want to go, we can align your resume, LinkedIn profile, networking approach, and interview strategies with that goal. I want students to feel confident and authentic telling their story instead of guessing what employers want to hear.
Q: Can you relate to online or working students?
Absolutely. I recently completed a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology through a part-time program for working professionals. Balancing school, work, and life is demanding, and I understand that reality firsthand.
Q: What should students expect when meeting with you?
A supportive, practical conversation focused on incremental progress. I am also very detail-oriented about formatting and presentation. Strong content matters, but clean, consistent materials help you look polished and professional.
Q: What’s your UVA connection?
I earned my undergraduate degree here, met my husband in first year, and have lived in Charlottesville for more than 20 years. My dad is a triple Hoo, so I’ve been wearing blue and orange since birth! UVA is a meaningful part of my personal and professional life.
Q: What’s a fun fact about you?
I am a proud dog owner of two doodles, including one enthusiastic yard “designer.”
